In the world of software engineering, the "three-year itch" is a well-known phenomenon. Many developers treat their careers like a series of short-form sprints—building a feature and then moving on to the next company.

For 13 years, I took a different path, growing my skills at a smaller firm where I wore every hat imaginable. While that experience was foundational, I eventually realized I wanted to scale my impact. I wasn't just looking for a new project; I was looking for world-class mentorship. I wanted to surround myself with the industry’s leading experts—the "human references" who have solved the complex identity challenges that define the modern enterprise.

That search led me to Okta. Here’s why I traded a decade of the familiar for the rewarding challenge of Identity.

Embracing the "Hard" Domain

During my interviews, my future manager was incredibly transparent: "Identity is a sophisticated domain. You will find opportunities to learn and grow every single day."

She was right. Identity isn't just a login box; it’s the essential foundation of digital trust. It’s a field where excellence is the baseline because we are responsible for securing access for millions of users globally. Coming from a self-taught background, I was eager to join an environment where I could learn from the best. At Okta, the complexity of the work isn't a hurdle—it’s the primary driver of innovation.

The Power of Collective Wisdom

One of the most impressive things I’ve discovered at Okta is the incredible tenure of our team. In an industry defined by high turnover, it’s common to find engineers here who have been with the company for five, seven, or even ten years.

This creates a unique culture of stability and shared knowledge:

  • Direct Access to Founders: You can reach out to the architects who built our foundational code a decade ago. They aren't just names in a repository; they are accessible colleagues and mentors.
  • A Culture of Teaching: Whether through our internal Hackathons or daily code reviews, there is a proactive, ego-free commitment to helping one another succeed.
  • Unified Mission: This spirit of collaboration extends across the entire company. From Engineering to Sales and Marketing, we are all aligned on a single goal: making the world a more secure place.

Defining the Future of AI Auth

Currently, I’m part of the AI Auth team, specifically focusing on authorization flows for AI agents. This is the frontier of our industry, and at Okta, we are leading the way with a "Security First" mindset.

We aren't just following AI trends; we are setting the standard for how AI can be deployed ethically and safely. We recently hit a major milestone with a release in December, and we continue to innovate with a focus on our core value: Always Secure. We’re ensuring that as AI evolves, the identity layer remains the most trusted and reliable part of the technology stack.

My Advice to Fellow Engineers

If you are looking for a place where your work has a lasting impact and where your professional growth is a priority, look for the hard problems. Look for the companies where the experts choose to stay and build.

At Okta, I didn't just find a new role; I found a community that values deep expertise and long-term vision. I found a domain that challenges me to be better every day.
